When Dave Van Belle hears the word 'sustainability' the first two things that come to his mind are environmental sustainability and economic sustainability.
The two go hand in hand, says the president of Van Belle Nursery, a family-owned wholesale nursery located just north of Abbotsford, B.C. Over the last 50 years the business has grown from a humble landscape supply farm to 100 acres of state-of-the-art greenhouses, container fields, raised bench yards, shipping bays, and gardens for producing thousands of flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals, evergreens and houseplants.
On this episode of Profitable Practices, Van Belle shares how he applies his vision of sustainability to make the business more efficient and help ensure the future of the nursery. "If the things we do are not going to have an economic payoff in the long term, I don't know if it's really sustainable," he says. "To be environmentally sustainable, it needs to be economically sustainable.
Lean efficiency practices, water management and electric vehicles are just some of the investments that make Van Belle Nursery more efficient, profitable and sustainable.
