(3 Sep 2015) Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Thursday that any successful plan for solving the crisis in Syria should take into consideration the central role of the Syrian people in determining their future.
In a joint news conference held in Damascus with Syrian Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Faisal Mekdad, Abdollahian affirmed that Iran appreciates "the pivotal role" of President Bashar Assad in leading Syria out of the conflict, while "preserving national unity."
Meanwhile, Mekdad lashed out on Western leaders and media for indirectly supporting extremists in Syria and Iraq.
The Syrian minister said that foreign fighters from Europe and the US get encouraged to come and join jihadis in Syria and Iraq when they hear their leaders condemning the Syrian regime.
