Once Nazi Germany was defeated, the western chiefs of staff were concerned about the enormous size of the Soviet forces deployed in Europe.

So concerned was Prime Minister Winston Churchill, that in the spring of 1945, he ordered his Chiefs of Staff to prepare a plan, ‘Operation Unthinkable’ to attack the Soviets.

The detailed proposal sought to claw back East Germany and Poland, as well as " impose upon Russia the will of the United States and the British Empire”
