(26 Dec 2017) Protesters took to the streets on Monday after Peru's president granted a medical pardon to former president Alberto Fujimori.
President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced Sunday night that he granted a medical pardon to Fujimori, who was serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses, corruption and the sanctioning of death squads.
Kuczynski released a statement on Christmas Eve saying he decided to free Fujimori for "humanitarian reasons," citing doctors who had determined the ex-leader suffers from incurable and degenerative problems.
Fujimori's daughter Keiko said this has been her father's happiest Christmas in the past 12 years despite being in intensive care.
Keiko said her father would remain in the intensive care unit until Tuesday.
