Strategic Analysis Australia’s Head of Research Marcus Hellyer says the ADF budget is “in a terrible state”
after a review triggered an “ambitious” $11.1 billion pledge from the Albanese government.
“You may not want to hear it, but the previous government’s ship-building plan was an absolute disaster,” Mr Hellyer told Sky News Australia host Peta Credlin.
“We spent $4 billion on the French submarines before we realised we didn’t want them.
“We have now spent $2 billion on the offshore patrol vessels before deciding they are not the right ship.
“And we have spent $4 billion already on the Hunter class frigates and we seem to think they are probably not the right ships but we kind of have to keep going because we’ve spent $4 billion.”
