Five more people died at the hospital overnight after an SUV was found upside down in a canal in Belle Glade on Monday evening, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reported in an update.
Four people were pronounced dead at the scene following the wreck, officials confirmed at the time. In all, nine people have died in the single-vehicle crash. A tenth person, who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time, remains hospitalized.
In an update, the sheriff's office released the identities and ages of those involved in the crash. Six of the passengers killed were children between the ages of 1 and 14.
According to the report, investigators determined the Ford Explorer was headed west on Hatton Highway around 7:30 p.m. in rural Belle Glade and the driver, who authorities have not identified at this time, failed to take the left-hand curve when the road turned south.
The SUV went off the road and onto a grass shoulder before striking a guardrail and overturning into the canal. Two of the six people found injured in the crash had to be flown to the hospital for treatment.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Tom Reyes said there were children and adults in the Explorer at the time of the crash. He described this wreck as, “one of the most difficult scenes I’ve been on.”
The report indicates the person who is still in the hospital is 26-year-old Jordan Rickey Hall. PBSO said Hall sustained serious injuries from the crash.
Tragically, six of the nine deceased were minors. The youngest, a baby girl, was about to turn two-years-old in September. Others include two five-year-old boys, a three-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and an eight-year-old boy.
Three women were also identified in the crash. The passengers were 30-year-oldLeiana Alyse Hall and 21-year-oldAnyia Monique Lee Tucker. Additionally, the driver, 56-year-oldPamela Wiggins, was killed the day before her 57th birthday.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced that they will investigate the single vehicle crash in coordination with PBSO.
