Assassin's Creed Odyssey arrives a year after the generally well-received Origins, and thus it's hard to avoid diminishing returns despite a superb main character (Kassandra) as well as an impressive new open world based on Classic Greece. Origins was an enjoyable and refreshingly revisionst action RPG take on the aging stealth-based AC formula, but didn't fundamentally challenge anything about the open world mechanics which have dominated almost two entire console cycles at this point. As much as I didn't care for Breath of the Wild, it would have felt more legitimate if Nintendo released a Zelda expansion this year rather than Ubisoft being at it again for the umpteenth (or 11th, if you only count the mainline series) time.
