PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – October 7, 2023 – The Providence and Burrillville police departments have released body-camera footage providing new insights into a tragic incident that occurred last month. The incident resulted in the death of Michael Pinto, a 40-year-old Glocester man, and injuries to a juvenile, later identified as Pinto's daughter.
The video footage provides a detailed account of the events on the fateful night of September 15th. Initial encounters with Pinto in Burrillville depicted confrontations on Route 146, where officers, with guns drawn, ordered Pinto to stop. Defying commands, Pinto drove towards an officer, prompting them to fire shots before he fled the scene.
Later, in Providence, Pinto's erratic driving behavior continued, leading him onto a sidewalk near Women & Infants Hospital. The situation escalated when he struck a nurse and drove in reverse, posing imminent danger to bystanders. Officers on the scene responded with gunfire. Pinto succumbed to his injuries, while his teenage daughter, who was also in the car, sustained gunshot wounds but survived.
The tragic incident also led to injuries to other individuals, including a nurse pinned between Pinto's car and a fence and Providence Lt. Eugene Chin. In line with standard procedures, the three officers involved in the shooting are currently on administrative leave.
The investigation, being carried out jointly by the Providence Police Department, Burrillville police, RI State Police, and the Office of the RI Attorney General, seeks to provide answers to the many questions arising from that night. The tragic event highlights the inherent dangers of police pursuits and confrontations, and the released footage serves as a sobering reminder of the high-stakes nature of law enforcement work.
