Families of children living in poverty often cannot afford beds for everyone. The kids share a small bed with their parents or siblings, sleep in a sleeping bag, or simply sleep on the floor. Child poverty affects children’s nutrition, self-perception, behavior, and more. But, with sleep being one of the most important things that humans do, “bed poverty”, perhaps, takes one of the biggest tolls on poor children.
Every child deserves a bed. It is a basic, essential need.
As you go to sleep tonight or tuck your kids into bed, think about the value a comfortable and safe place to sleep can have. Sleep is not only a necessity, but it can also be a very vulnerable state. Most of us have the privilege of snuggling up into a cozy place where we can expect to sleep for as long as our alarm clocks will allow. However, not every child has that privilege.
The last thing a child should have to think about is where they are going to sleep.
New Life Furniture Bank is the area’s only regional “furniture bank” collecting donations of gently used beds and home furnishings and delivering them directly to families in need in Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Dayton, OH.
Last year NLFB distributed over 1500 beds and this year the goal is to provide over 2000 to get children off the floor. Donations of clean mattresses, box springs, frames, bedding, and new pillows are greatly needed. You can call the Blue Ash non-profit at 513-313-0530 to make arrangements to drop off your bed donations or schedule a pick-up at nlfurniture.org.
