The usefulness of fiberglass, when applied in the right places, makes the proper application of it an important skill. This week, we tackle three projects, two of which call for fiberglass sheathing, and a third that is a layup set over a mold that will eventually be broken out.
Steve, with some sound advice from Narwhal Labs, makes the pieces that will be brought offsite for completion. Knowing that fiberglass cloth doesn't like making 90-degree turns, he builds in a cove or radius at each internal or external corner. He also fairs each piece, and sands them, because epoxy adheres best to surfaces that are rough, but fiberglass wants surfaces that are flat or gently curved.
Narwhal Labs is a makerspace in Bristol, Rhode Island that also serves as the R&D department for TotalBoat and Jamestown Distributors. We spent two days working there primarily with resident maker Andrew Nota, whose background is rooted in fine furniture making and a bit of surfboard building. We're thankful for his and everyone's help there at Jamestown Distributors, which has been akin to other warm and hearty offers of help, advice, service, and talent that the boating community has given in spades. Cheers to them, and cheers to you! We hope you enjoy the video this week.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building a 38' wooden boat in Steve's backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
