In this Electric guitar tutorial James breaks down the iconic Chinatown by Thin Lizzy.

Chinatown was taken from Thin Lizzy's tenth studio album of the same name in 1980. This iteration the the band featured Phil Lynott on Bass, Scott Gorham and Snowy White on Lead guitars and Brian Downey on Drums

The song uses predominantly the Em pentatonic scale and is in 12/8 time.
It starts with a riff using exclusively the open strings and second fret. Following this is a blistering descending sequenced lick using the 5th position of the minor pentatonic scale before working back up the first position on the 12th fret with some bends.

After the big E5 power chord that is held for 2 bars comes the final walk up from the root on the low E and A strings before going back to the introductory lick Where Phil Lynott starts to sing.

.Thin Lizzy are widely recognised as the rock band that has two guitarists. Because of this I have taken a bit of both guitarists parts and put together how I would play it in a lone guitarist in a gig scenario.

I believe a Gibson Les paul and a Stratocaster were used on the original recordings with what I assume are Marshall amplifiers. For the tone in this video I used ‘Maggie” my 1982 Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Boss Katana Artist on the crunch channel with plenty of gain and treble. I also added a spring reverb.
