Temperatures finally climbed out of the teens, reaching into the 20s Tuesday morning in Raleigh, and this is just the start of a gradual warming trend that will return us to the 60s by the end of the week. Tuesday afternoon will be a bit milder, with a high of 49. Wednesday will be even warmer, promising a high in the mid 50s. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will see highs in the 60s, and Sunday – the first day of 2023 – could reach 71 degrees.
Saturday's weather will be warm enough for outdoor activities at WRAL First Night, the downtown Raleigh New Year's celebration, but some rain may fall with the acorn to begin the New Year. "The bulk of it looks like it would happen during the day and last into the early evening hours," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze. "There could be a few isolated thunderstorms along with the chance for rain."
A morning shower can't be ruled out for Sunday morning, but mostly sunny skies return for the afternoon.
The longer term looks warm as well.
"Looking at the first week of January, above normal temperatures are expected. We're talking about 60s and perhaps even 70s for parts of our state," WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said. "This warm air could stick around at least through the 10th of the month , so it looks like winter is on hiatus."
