This horse is a tester. He pays attention and tries to identify weaknesses in the human. Something I am sure many know-it-all horse people taught him in his previous years. Therefore, every now and then, he will try to see if he can say No. So he tries it and sees how it plays out.
Most times, it is not a big deal and you work through it and move on. The problem is the more a horse learns he can try no, the more he will try it. At some point, you have to be able to see that what started as a minor test has now become a bad habit and a learned disrespectful behavior that will eventually escalate into more refusals and bigger refusals which will eventually work its way to a dangerous unpredictable horse.
All horses either moves up to what is required or learn how to set their on bar and do only what they want, when they want it. That is the beginning of a problem horse.
The more you let a horse tell you no, the more they try to tell you no. That is not good, then you end up with a horse that is always testing and trying to see if you really a strong leader. On the other hand, it you make clear, make it uncomfortable, show the horse that saying NO is NOT worth it, then the horse learns NOT to say no and becomes much more compliant.
Being too nice, asking 10 times, begging, letting the horse say no with no STRONG consequence, all teaches a horse that you are not clear, not a good leader and is something that needs to be tested all the time.
This trailer issue with Roper is moving towards this is a game and he thinks he gets to say no when he wants and he gets to play lead horse when he wants. The first few refusals to load were training and making sure the horse knows what you want and making sure you are being clear and not confusing. NOW, it is becoming, I don't care what you want, I know what you want, but I don't think I have to give it to you. Bad lessons that may be only a trailer loading issue today, but will soon turn into other bad behaviors.
At some point you need to get serious and make the horse sorry he said no. Make a horse learn that saying NO is NOT worth it so the horse does not want to try it. Then you get a horse that starts being more compliant and easy and learns to say Yes since that is easier.
