When you're on stage in a performance with a live orchestra, you don't think much beyond the steps and the timing of the choreography. Which I why I chose this next remarkable guest, to talk through what happens the other side of the curtain.

Introducing the Principal Conductor and soon to be Music Director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, Paul Murphy!

Paul studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has been working as a conductor in ballet for 32 years!

He has conducted all the famous ballet classics such as Sleeping beauty, Swan Lake and the Nutcracker, and has worked on ballets with the incredible David Bintley who was the director of the company when I was there! He has also toured many parts of the world!

I had no idea just how challenging it is to be a conductor and a musician in the orchestra pit. We talk about Paul's amazing journey, how you can become a ballet conductor through a fellowship programme, and how much you have a adapt as a conductor for ballet, plus advice from a musicians, conductors and dancers perspective. It's incredible.
