The excavation of human remains, which could date back as far as 1300, has begun in Edinburgh. A team of archaeologists are on-site preparing to remove remains that are likely to be affected by the Trams to Newhaven project. They have so far exhumed more than 10 bodies, dating from between 1300 and 1650, and have uncovered a cannonball, as well as the apparent remnants of the original medieval graveyard wall. Previous investigations have shown that in the medieval period the South Leith Parish Church graveyard extended across the road with graves surviving beneath the current road surface.
