Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International criticize the lack of progress in the investigation into the migrant shipwreck off the Peloponnese.
The ship sank on June 14, leaving more than 500 dead, and is considered one of the Mediterranean's worst-ever boat disasters. HRW and Amnesty International allege that the Hellenic Coast Guard's "actions and omissions" contributed to the shipwreck.
Survivors demand justice, expressing concerns about accountability due to the ongoing and seemingly incomplete inquiry. The Pylos shipwreck is viewed as another example of Greek authorities neglecting responsibility for saving lives at sea.
The fishing trawler, piloted by people smugglers, sank about 50 miles off the southern Greek town of Pylos. Conflicting accounts surround the events leading to the disaster, with survivors describing coast guard actions that officials deny.
Greek authorities are accused of failing to mobilize appropriate resources for rescue and ignoring offers of assistance from Frontex. Rights groups urge Greek authorities to prosecute officials, if there is evidence of wrongdoing in the shipwreck.
The incident is seen as indicative of a pushback policy aimed at forcibly evicting asylum seekers, and campaigners call for accountability in handling the tragedy.
