This technique will significantly boost your ability to retrieve the Mavic Pro while sailing. It follows the same principle as the assist-landing or haul-down landing systems used by the Navy. The five feet long dyneema fishing line provides the extra leverage while trying to capture the drone. Once the line has been grabbed, the drone can be essentially pulled-down towards the deck of the boat. This method is especially useful in rough seas, when the relative position of the boat and the drone can be very difficult to maintain.
Hope all the sailors and drone pilots find this method useful. Happy sailing and safe flying!
DISCLAIMER:
The purpose of my video is to share with the community the method I used to fly Mavic from a sailboat. I have used this method in a number of places ( Chesapeake bay, Cyclades islands, Seychelles, Hong Kong ) on board of different boats ( monohull, catamaran ), and with different groups of people ( I need some one to perform the launch and retrieve ) under various of sea states. In total, I have performed close to 30 successful flights. I would not share this method if I have not used myself, and I would not invest my time and efforts to make this video, if I am not convinced that this is the best way (at least to me) to retrieve a Mavic on a sailboat.
1. This video is in no way guarantee the prevention of injury or loss of property. You as the drone pilot, make your own decision whether or not to fly with or without this method, and fly at your own risk.
2. It will be safer to stop or slow down the boat ( ease main, heave-to) while attempting the retrieval. I did without slowing down to prove the concept, but in practice, it is much safer to slow down or stop.
3. The fish line tether is only used to establish contact with the drone, and to pull down the drone within arm's reach. Never attempt to pull the drone down below the retriever's head. (wear a pair of glass to prevent injury)
4. Mavic is intended to be video platform, not a dog fighter. Accelerate and break gradually. The tether line will swing during flight or due to the wind, increase the weight to 20 or 30 gram if you are concerned that the fishing line got blown upwards.
5. I will be happy to hear from you about your thoughts after trying this method.
