Top Fuel leader Jeb Allen lost early and stood in waiting to see if he would be overtaken by Gary Beck. Beck entered the final round against Dwight Salisbury needing to accomplish a hat trick to beat Allen: a win, low e.t., and top speed. When it became apparent that Beck was going to beat Salisbury to the finish line, all eyes were glued to the scoreboard. Beck set low e.t. but came up two mph shy of the top speed mark, thus awarding the championship to Allen by the slimmest of margins.
