Watch this film of Millie Steele and her work that she made while she was an artist in residence, 25th January - 7th February 2021, at SVA , 4 John Street, Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK GL5 2HA.
Millie's shares her ideas and inspirations behind the perplexing installations she made during the residency, experimenting with time and motion, which felt at times poignantly ominous in this unprecedented time.
"This residency gave me the time and space to experiment with ideas I had been developing during lockdown. "
"The work I have made is particularly interested in the notion of time and how we spend it. I created motorised sculptures out of unwanted items I found in my shed; a swing ball game, playstation wheels, scalextrics, clocks, an old karaoke microphone. "
"One piece I made included three motorised playstation wheels. The wheels zealously spin around the floor on an axis, going nowhere, until they wear themselves out. It is a comment on temporality and the ceaselessness of time."
"Another piece is made from an old swing ball game. The swing ball constantly spins around on its own, without the need of someone there to keep hitting it. I was interested in making items that appeared to be stuck in time, which is how I’ve been feeling over the past few months. "
"Thank you to @locodooms for making this film! "
