STORYLINE:
U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi arrived in Kabul on Tuesday for talks with leaders of Afghanistan's often quarrelsome political factions.
It was not immediately known whether he would meet Hamid Karzai, the new interim prime minister, but he did meet with the Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah.
Karzai's administration is scheduled to take office for a six-month term from December 22.
However, some tribal and other factions have been quarreling over the structure of the temporary government.
United Nations spokesperson Ahmed Fawzi said whichever force is deployed to aid the smooth transition of power will be deployed with the full agreement of the Afghan authorities.
"Let me remind you that nothing the UN is doing here is being imposed on the Afghan people. This has to be a homegrown solution, a one hundred percent Afghan solution," Fawzi said.
The United Nations did not disclose Brahimi's schedule of meetings for the two-day visit.
Brahimi is scheduled to return to neighbouring Pakistan on Wednesday.
