The sound of the Common Swift’s loud screaming call is a sure sign that summer has arrived. In the UK, Swifts arrive in April or early May for the breeding season having spent the winter in Africa. In the evenings, the birds often form ‘screaming parties’- a group of Swifts flying low, chasing after one another and calling loudly.
Common Swifts can fly at speeds of up to 70 miles an hour and they spend almost their entire life in the air – even sleeping on the wing. I filmed these Swifts in July when they were flying particularly low over the neighbourhood, probably due to the low cloud and impending rain.
