Sanchin kata (Uechiryu) is unique in that it maintains its own “quanli” – a respectful and ceremonious salutation that opens and closes the form; a common component of Fuzhou regional systems. As Simon Lailey pointed out "...more than simply denoting respect, each “quanli” also translates to effective self-defence." (Lailey, Simon. “Thoughts on Paper.” The Uechi-Ryu Journal, vol. 1, no. 5, 2005).
The closing posture of Sanchin is called 'closed gate' & as you can expect has a number of practical applications. We teach 7 at the small dojo here in Manitoba.
Much of the non-sport technical self defense material we cover deals with common bullying tactics; pushes, shoves, holds, cyber, etc. Grabbing and holding (before being hit) are common themes for our students.
Here is the first 'closed gate' application we teach. This is from an online video lesson we filmed as part of a program to teach Karate, partnering with schools in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
