Three pieces Moreno Torroba’s (1891-1982) Castillos de España:
Torija (Elegia) is one of a number of castles clustered in the countryside around the cathedral city of Toledo. Moreno Torroba nostalgically recreates the splendours of the original thirteenth-century castle destroyed by Juan Martín el Empecinado in 1811.
Redaba is a mysterious title as no castle of that name is known. Perhaps Moreno Torroba is representing a similarly named castle such as Sádaba or Ribadavia or musically evoking a fortress that exists only in the realms of fantasy and legend.
Moreno Torroba presents a waltz-like dance with dotted rhythms in D major that modulates to G minor and evolves through various keys before the recapitulation of the main theme.
Sigüenza, subtitled La Infanta Duerme (The Sleeping Princess) is a gentle lullaby supported by impressionist harmonies representing the Moorish castle of Sigüenza.
