(21 Nov 2017) The head of Zimbabwe's influential war veterans association on Tuesday equated the regime of President Robert Mugabe with that of former Prime Minister Ian Smith, whose years of minority white rule Mugabe and the veterans overthrew.
"We had to unite everybody to defeat Ian Smith and this is the same unity we are bringing again today to defeat the tyrannic regime which had become despotic of Mugabe," Chris Mutsvangwa told a news conference in Zimbabwe.
Mutsvangwa also described Mugabe as "senile".
While there is a national consensus that the 93-year-old president should go after nearly four decades in power, Mugabe has refused to step down as leader of a country that has known no other leader since independence from white minority rule in 1980.
Mugabe faces impeachment proceedings and more street demonstrations even as he ignores calls to resign.
It is not clear how long impeachment would take, though the ruling party has said it could vote Mugabe out as early as Wednesday.
