Episode 28
Having our laptop charged fried the previous night we set out to replace it so we could keep filming. We found the smallest electronic shop at the bottom of a mall and when Mike walked in the shop was nearly at customer capacity. It was a huge relief to replace the computer charger so now we refocused on exploring the culture of Cusco.
Robbie met a seller of some cultural artwork which was really well done so he and a few other purchased a painting as a memo for the trip.
One of the main highlights was the San Pedro Market which had one of the most abundant selections of fruit and vegetables you can imagine, along with meats and other traditional market goods. We couldn't leave without purchasing some of the fruits to indulge in where the freshness and lack of super-farming percolated our plates with flavor, it was wonderful. Lucuma is amazing!
Next up was the Saksaywaman Ruins that lay on a mountain top staring down at the Cusco Valley as well as our hostel. Built in the 13th century this historical Inca site demonstrates the "dry stone" wall which are carefully cut boulders that fit more than perfectly together without the use of mortar. Even today a piece of paper will not fit between most stones.
This site rests at 3,700 meters and covering larger areas on foot has altitude sickness making its presence notable, again.
Cusco, often spelled Cuzco ( Spanish ), is the capital of the Cusco Region and Cusco Province, located in southeastern Peru near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes mountain range. It is a fascinating city that was once the capital of the entire Inca Empire. For many tourists, it is the gateway if you are traveling to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley or any other Inca sites in the region. Layers of history can be seen from the spanish colonial buildings to the ruins surrounding Cusco such as Saksaywaman and Sacsayhuaman, the site of ancient battle involving the Inca. At 3,400m / 11,200 ft Cusco presents altitude sickness for the majority of people who live at a much lower elevation and it played a major role in our exploration.
