Should you carbo load for a 5k?
We’ve talked about the importance of carbo loading for the marathon, but what about a 5k?
Given that a 5k is not long enough to burn through your glycogen stores, carbo loading is not necessary.
In fact this video is pretty much a what not to do in terms of fueling. 😂
The night before a 5k, carbs are certainly good and fine but don’t feel like you have to stockpile them in the days leading up. Avoid heavy items like fettuccine alfredo and stick to things you are used to!
My go to is either pasta with red sauce and chicken, or salmon with rice and broccoli. Find what works for you and stick with it.
In high school once, my team decided to go to a buffet restaurant the night before cross country regionals where the men’s team got in an eating competition. Let’s just say that didn’t go well. 😵
The morning of, have some easily digestible carbs like a banana, toast, or oatmeal. Add a little nut butter for a little extra boost.
If you are running in some heat & humidity, make sure you are hydrating well and getting in plenty of electrolytes 💦
What are your favorite pre-race meals?!
