Want to enter an industry that’s seen 250% growth over the past five years? The number of cannabis jobs have increased from 122,800 jobs to 428,059 between 2017 and 2022, according to the 2022 Leafly Jobs Report. And the opportunities are expected to keep growing as consumer demand increases.
Not long ago, a cannabis career seemed far-fetched. Marijuana use was outlawed in every state until California became the first to legalize it for medical purposes in 1996. Today, a career in cannabis is possible for people interested in pursuing one. As of July 2022, 37 states have legalized medical marijuana, and 19 states plus the District of Columbia have legalized recreational and medical marijuana use.
Even though federal law still bans marijuana use, the Justice Department has largely avoided prosecuting businesses and consumers in states where it is legal. That hands-off approach in combination with state laws legalizing marijuana use have allowed the cannabis market to grow.
Cannabis consumers spent about $25 billion in 2021, according to the Leafy Jobs Report, and only 25% of the potential demand is currently being met.
That untapped market demand could foreshadow job security for those seeking a career in the cannabis industry — in states where marijuana use is legal, of course.
