The federal government has decided to have a 2-euro commemorative coin “Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” minted and to issue it in January 2024. The coin is the second issue in the “Federal States II ” series beginning in 2023, in which a country is to be honored each year by issuing a 2-euro commemorative coin with a striking landmark. The order of the states is based on the presidency of the Bundesrat. The series focuses on the cultural identity and regional characteristics of the individual countries. It thus follows on from the successful predecessor series "Federal States" (2006 - 2022), which expired in January 2022.
The national side (image side) was designed by the artist Michael Otto from Rodenbach. It focuses on the iconic "Königsstuhl", which is part of the Jasmund National Park, with its typical chalk cliffs surrounded by beech forests and opens up the view of the monumentality of this unique landmark through the selected beach perspective. In the core area there is also the nationality designation "D" for the issuing country Federal Republic of Germany, the year 2024, the embossed letter of the respective mint (note: the letter X serves here only as a placeholder.) , the lettering "MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN" and the initials of the artist. The twelve stars of Europe are arranged on the outer ring of the national side.
The European side corresponds to the common value side of the 2 euro circulation coin used from 2007. It shows a map of Europe without national borders.
The technical parameters of the €2 commemorative coin correspond to those of the "normal" €2 circulation coin.
The edge of the German 2-euro commemorative coin contains the following inscription in deep embossing:
"UNITY AND JUSTICE AND FREEDOM"
and a stylized federal eagle.
The circulation intended for circulation will be up to 30 million pieces.
The coin is legal tender throughout the euro area.
