Accompanying the current “Goya” exhibition, renowned contemporary artist Philippe Parreno has created a film based on Goya’s iconic Black Paintings series (Pinturas negras, 1819–1824). The work is currently screening at the Fondation Beyeler.
The 14 murals were originally painted in Goya’s residence on the outskirts of Madrid and were most likely not intended for public viewing. Now in the collection of the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, the paintings are so fragile that they cannot leave the museum. In this interview Parreno explains, how he managed to bring the Black paintings to the Fondation Beyeler through film and which work of Goya’s he chose to be hung in the screening room.

Die 14 Wandgemälde wurden ursprünglich in Goyas Wohnhaus am Stadtrand von Madrid gemalt und waren wahrscheinlich nicht für die Öffentlichkeit bestimmt. Die Gemälde befinden sich heute in der Sammlung des Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid und sind so zerbrechlich, dass sie das Museum nicht verlassen dürfen. In diesem Interview erklärt Parreno, wie er es geschafft hat, die Schwarzen Gemälde durch den Film in die Fondation Beyeler zu bringen und welches Werk Goyas er für den Projektionsraum ausgewählt hat.
