On the eve before D-Day, a parachute squad, the majority of whom are part of an integrated unit, is deployed to an old church to demolish a German radio-jamming tower. Their plane is shot down and crashes, killing the majority of the squad, including squad leader Sgt. Rensin, either in the accident or as a result of Nazi soldiers or landmines. There are four survivors: Corporal Ford, second in charge, Pfc. Pfc. Boyce Pvt. Tibbet and Tibbet Chase.
The group continues on their journey and encounters Chloe, a young woman from the village where the church is located. She allows them to take shelter in her home. Chloe lives with her 8-year-old brother Paul and her aunt, who was scarred as a result of Nazi experiments in the church. A Nazi patrol led by SS Hauptsturmführer Wafner visits Chloe after Tibbet and Chase leave to inspect the rendezvous place. Wafner dispatches his men, then coerces Chloe into having sex with him, threatening to send her brother to the church to be "cured." Boyce is unable to remain silent and interrupts the Nazi commander. Wafner is restrained by Ford, who is forced to follow suit.
Boyce observes Nazis burning disfigured village inhabitants while attempting to reach the rendezvous site to hunt for Tibbet and Chase. He is pursued by a dog and is forced to take refuge in a truck transporting bodies into the church. Boyce discovers an underground base that houses not only a radio operating room, but also a laboratory where the Germans conduct various experiments on the villagers including a mystery serum and a vast pit filled with black tar after snatching his way out of the vehicle. Boyce steals a syringe carrying the serum and saves Rosenfeld, a fellow paratrooper who was caught alive. They make their way out of the base's sewers.
