"To The West" - from Montaña
by Michael Gordon
Texts
From Tucumseh's speech to the Osages, Winter 1811-12:
Brothers, We all belong to one family; we are all children of the Great Spirit; we walk in the same path; slake our thirst at the same spring...
Brothers, We are friends; we must assist each other... The blood of our fathers and brothers has run like water. We are threatened with a great evil.
From a letter of Thomas Jefferson to Meriwether Lewis:
June twentieth eighteen o three.
To Meriwether Lewis, Captain. From Thomas Jefferson, President.
The object of your mission is to explore the Missouri River and such principal stream of it, as by its course and communication, with the waters of the Pacific Ocean, whether the Columbia, Oregon, Colorado or any other river may offer the most direct and practicable water communication across this continent for the purposes of commerce.
