The skills learned from cataract surgery, such as working within the anterior chamber and pivoting within the incisions, can be applied to learning other anterior segment surgeries. This video features Dr James Sanchez from Portland, Oregon, USA, who was also completed his residency training at UCLA with our team in 2015. He also won my award for best resident surgery that year.
In this video, Dr Sanchez shows us his technique of DMEK: Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty. In fact, he combined it with a cataract surgery, though we have omitted that from the video. The key in the cataract surgery is to use a minimal amount of dilating drops and then to make a smaller capsulorhexis so that the IOL is held securely in the capsular bag even if there are pressure changes due to the air bubble used at the end of surgery.
