Khaspur was the last capital of the Kachari kingdom. Located around 25 km from Silchar in southern Assam, the Kings palace is one of the last remnants of the erstwhile kingdom.
Kachari kings were the earlier ruler of large land mass in the north eastern region of India. In 15th century the Kachari kingdom extended from river Brahmaputra in the north to Tripura and Sylhet district of present day Bangladesh. The Kachari kings were in armed confrontation with the Ahom kings for a long time. Initially the Kacharis defeated the Ahom kings but later the Ahoms got the upper hand. After a series of defeats Kachari king moved his capital from Dimapur in present day Nagaland to Maibang in the present day Assam and finally to Kashpur near Silchar in present day Assam. The history of Kachari kingdown is very interesting with folklore and myth assimilated.
Khaspur rajbari (palace) is an important archeological monument in this region. It is probably the only palace in the Barak valley which is still visible which was part of a kingdom. The rajbari is spread over a huge area and looks like it could have been a large built up area. Some large wall and boundary are still visible. As of now only some remnants of the palace is visible. Comparatively the place seems to be small and if I may say so, the king does not look indulgent. The design of the palace is unique and seems to be inspired from the design of terracotta temple of Bishnupur, West Bengal. Entry to Kashpur Rajbari is free. It should certainly be part of Silchar city tour.
The last Kachari king Gobinda Chandra Hansu did not had any heir. After his death, the British annexed his kingdom.
