Hi everyone. Aiden here at Etrailer. Today we're taking a look at the Yakima Fresh Track. It's a ski and snowboard carrier for your roof and it's gonna be on our 2021 Jeep Gladiator. Now the way this works is you've got these two jaws that actually sandwich your gear in between these thick rubber pads. The jaws closed down, ratchet down, and hold it really steady.
That rubber is going to provide a really great grip but also padding to protect your gear. The jaws open up with very large buttons on the front. Most of these ski carriers do have large buttons but the fresh track here probably has my favorite ones just because they're super easy to hit with the palm of your hands, which you've got gloves or mittens on, you're gonna be able to do it. In addition to that, those buttons do lock up so you've got that security aspect for your gear inside, and it's pretty easy to get everything unloaded too. Once those jaws are open, they hold themselves open 'cause they're spring loaded and you can get everything off.
I will say that because of the height of your roof if you need to get to the very innermost slot it is a bit difficult to reach so you will have to probably climb up onto your running boards or into the door jam to reach it. That's something you don't want to do. You can always check out the Kuat Grip. It's gonna be a similar version of this, but the whole bottom tray actually slides out so it makes all of those slot of the back easy to reach. Now one thing I don't love as much about the fresh track here is the way it clamps around the crossbar.
I like how easy it is to do cause it's tool free with this hand knob right here, but the method of locking isn't great. What it's designed to do is actually run down the set screw and it'll hold that hand knob in place. But for me, I don't trust it too much just because it's a plastic hand knob with a small indentation for that set screw to sit. Over time, that plastic will wear it down and someone could mess with it enough to get it off. I'd prefer just a standard locking core to bind up the whole clamp, but that's just me.
You might be fine with that and not be too concerned about it. As far as usable space goes, I'm gonna grab my tape measure real quick and measure the inside edge of the carrier so we can see how much gear we can fit in there. From inside edge to inside edge, it's about 18 and three quarters of an inch, so that's about how much room you have to work with to fit your skis, your snowboards, or maybe even fishing poles. in the off season. I think it's gonna be more than enough, but if you do need more space, you can check out some other size options. The Yakima Fat Cat Evo series also has a couple other size options and it's gonna be a pretty similar style with those. I like the clamp around method a bit better, but it's not as tool free and quick and easy to do like these hand knobs are. So just keep that in mind. You might be trading off security for ease of use. Overall though, I do like this a lot better than your alternative, which is a roof box. Roof boxes are a lot bigger and bulkier, more expensive, and they're harder to store. So whenever you don't have it on your roof you've gotta find a place for that box to live, and they generally just take up too much room in the garage for my personal liking. So for me, this seems like the better option. I think it's gonna fit really well on your Jeep Gladiator or here, and get your gear to the destination safely. Thanks for watching..
