Integration of nature into urban developments is increasingly recognised as one of the leading ways in which cities can be made more attractive, sustainable and resilient. These nature-based or ‘blue-green’ solutions use urban water and green in a multi-functional way, which makes them much more effective than traditional single-function solutions. Climate-KIC, through its funding of the Blue Green Dream project and the Smart-Sustainable Districts programme, has enabled the successful development and implementation of a systems approach to attractive sustainable, resilient and cost-efficient urban development. Our approach enables districts to exploit the multi-functional potential of nature-based solutions in a systematic and quantitative manner. Importantly, our approach recognises that there are multiple stakeholders with different needs and caters for these by maximising the economic and societal benefits.
