Lisa Cowan, Soka Gakkai member in the UK, describes how discussion meetings helped her gain confidence and how through sharing with others, she was able to study Buddhist principles and apply them in her everyday life.
Soka Gakkai discussion meetings are usually held on a monthly basis. They give people the opportunity to develop meaningful connections and a sense of community. The sharing of faith experiences—the transformation in people’s lives realized through Buddhist practice—is a central element of discussion meetings. The example of successfully confronting and overcoming challenges provides encouragement to others struggling with their own problems. In this way, individual experiences of transformation become the inspiration for a wider movement of societal change.
The Soka Gakkai is a global community-based Buddhist organization that promotes peace, culture and education centered on respect for the dignity of life. Its members in 192 countries and territories study and put into practice the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism.
Soka Gakkai members strive to actualize their inherent potential while contributing to their local communities and responding to the shared issues facing humankind. The conviction that individual happiness and the realization of peace are inextricably linked is central to the Soka Gakkai, as is a commitment to dialogue and nonviolence.
