It has been an awful year for high streets in the UK. The march toward out-of-town destinations continues. Vacancy rates in some town centres are approaching 30%, while almost two-thirds of towns have seen shop vacancy levels increase by more than 10% over the past three years. In addition to tough trading conditions, last spring's riots affected city centres in London and beyond. Can anything be done to turn around the fortunes of high street? The British government is conducting a review, led by retail guru Mary Portas. But can the retail industry, property owners, and advisors help too? Are there lessons to be shared with continental Europe?
