For most of us, Oxygen sensors (also known as a Lambda or O2 sensor) are a little bit 'out of sight out of mind'.
However, the sensor is vital part of the overall vehicles emissions control system.
How does an Oxygen sensor work
.The O2 sensor doesn't actually measure the oxygen concentration in the exhaust, but rather the difference between the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas and the amount of oxygen in the air itself.
.This information is constantly fed back to the engine control unit/module (also known as ECU or ECM) as a voltage signal to be analysed.
.If the engine is running too rich (too much fuel/air at a signal of approx. 0.9 volts), or too lean (too much air/fuel at approx. signal of 0.1 volts), the ECU will adjust the operation of the engines fuel mixture and timing to achieve an optimal fuel/air ratio.
.O2 sensors allow the engines control unit to make constant adjustments to deliver optimal performance with the lowest emissions possible.
