Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Kabul on Thursday, March 24 to meet with the ruling Taliban leadership. This is the first high-level visit to the 'government' in Afghanista that has not yet been internationally recognized. Wang Yi said China never sought selfish interests, interfered in internal affairs, or sought 'spheres of influence' in a thinly-veiled comment on US involvement in the country for 20 years.
He met 'deputy PM' Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and 'foreign minister' Amir Khan Muttaqi during his visit.
In a statement after the meeting, China expressed hope that Afghanista territory would not be used to impact security of neighbouring countries, and welcomed the country's participation in the BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
