Born in Charlottesville Virginia in March, 1887, the future WWII General, Alexander Vandegrift, had an extraordinary 40 year career in the Marines. From Nicaragua to China to Guadalcanal, he learned to strategize and to lead his men well. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in February, 1943 for his extraordinary service in the Pacific.
