Antony Blinken looked uncomfortable as President Joe Biden branded China's President Xi Jinping a dictator during a press conference.
China does not seek to “unseat” the United States as the world’s superpower, President Xi has said, but Beijing’s absorption of Taiwan is inevitable and the US must stop arming the democratic island.
The warning came during a four-hour summit meeting in San Francisco at which Xi and President Biden agreed to resume military-to-military communication and to stifle the spread of the deadly drug fentanyl. The agreements mark the end of a year-long freeze in top-level diplomacy between the world’s richest countries, during which military tension has heightened in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
Biden told reporters afterwards that the talks were “some of the most constructive and productive discussions we’ve had”. But, as expected, the two failed to reach any breakthrough on the destiny of Taiwan, the self-governing island that Beijing insists must be “reunited” with the mainland by force if necessary.
