Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016
Cyber crime is a serious issue that affects millions of people around the world. In Pakistan, the government has enacted a law to prevent and punish various types of electronic crimes, such as unauthorized access, hacking, cyber terrorism, hate speech, cyber stalking, child pornography, and more.
The law is called the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA 2016) and it applies to all citizens of Pakistan as well as foreigners who commit any act of cyber crime in or outside Pakistan¹.
In this video, I will explain the main features and provisions of PECA 2016, such as the establishment of an investigation agency, the procedural powers for investigation, the offences and punishments, the international cooperation, and the preventive measures. I will also discuss some of the criticisms and challenges that the law faces, such as its impact on freedom of expression, privacy, and human rights.
