Even more scary these days is the rise of multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria, so we need creative solutions to fight them. A corporate research group of two British universities has made experiments with a predatory bacterial species in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae. The tests showed how the predatory bacterium, called Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus fought against pathogenic bacteria in the animals, hence the survival rate rose significantly. The results are promising, therefore this process could mean a whole new angle in protection against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Additional experiments are needed in higher vertebrates whether Bdellovibrio can work against other bacterial infections as well, but maybe one day this little microbial knight can fight in Your body against E. coli and Salmonella bacteria as well.
