Taliban Truck Bombing
A suicide bomber driving a truck loaded with explosives has attacked a police compound in Logar province, south of Kabul. Three soldiers and three civilians were killed. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. It’s the first major attack since the Taliban appointed a new leader.
US Confirms Anti-ISIS Air Strike
Washington has confirmed it has carried out its first air strike against ISIS from a Turkish air base. The US began flying armed drones last week. But the Pentagon says this was the first lethal action the US has launched from Turkey. Turkey agreed to allow the US to use its Incirlik air base last month.
Closer to Confirming MH370
French investigators say they can very ‘strongly presume’ part of a wing found on the French Island of Reunion is debris from missing flight Malaysia Airlines MH370. The Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak earlier said the information had been ‘conclusively confirmed.’ MH370 went missing in March last year while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Extensive searches have so far turned up no trace of the plane or the 239 people on board.
Haitians Move to Refugee Camps
Officials say that at least 2 thousand Dominicans of Haitian descent are now living in four refugee camps in Haiti. They were forced to leave the Dominican Republic because of its new immigration policy that leaves many of them stateless. A 2013 law stripped Dominican citizens with undocumented parents of their citizenship. Many have called the law a type of ‘social cleansing.’After the new law was heavily criticised, Santo Domingo passed a law that allowed some people to apply for temporary residency. There are about one million Haitians living in the Dominican Republic.
