Carmen Lozar stands at the forefront of a new generation of glass artists, who were introduced to flameworking, in a university art program.
Carmen is not focused on becoming a flameworking master, in a vocational sense, because technical proficiency is not the most valuable part of her creative process. In her studio and as a college instructor, her strength is developing ideas. Once the ideas start to solidify, she looks to books, images and art history, to help identify the parameters of the creative process. Next, she starts sketching, to work through the aesthetics of the piece, while anticipating its technical challenges. Whether the piece is a single figure, a scene, or just an object, all of her work is driven by human emotion and psychological relationships, often from a female perspective.
