The Portland Police Bureau says a four-year-old boy has died after suffering suspicious injuries, and his father has been arrested for his murder.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, PPB officers responded to an emergency call in the 6400 block of Northeast Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in the Piedmont Neighborhood.
First responders found a 4-year-old who had suffered "significant" traumatic injuries and was unconscious. He was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital where, despite lifesaving efforts by medical staff, he died from his injuries.
Family members, who identified the boy as Jhorden Clay, said they have not been told what happened to the boy.
"The worker said this is one of the worst cases she’s seen," Jhorden's mother, Jonicia Clay, said. "It’s so bad that the people won’t tell me the cause of death over the phone. I’m waiting for the detective to come to my house tonight to tell me.”
The Portland Police Bureau Child Abuse Team (CAT) and Homicide Unit detectives investigated the death.
The child’s father, Marquavious D. Ware, 19, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on second-degree murder and first-degree criminal mistreatment.
"I want him in jail for the rest of his life," Jonicia Clay said. "If you can't tell he's a menace to society. He beat up a man on the MAX in front of his wife and child and broke his jaw... how can you beat up your own kid?"
Clay was referencing Ware's 2018 arrest for a brutal assault on a TriMet MAX train. Charges against Ware, who was a juvenile at the time, were dropped.
