Sunset over the Danube as seen from a train between Bucharest and Timișoara. Between the stations of Drobeta Turnu Severin and Orșova, the railway line runs parallel to the Danube the entire time.
We are now entering the 'Iron Gates' (called 'Porțile de Fier' in Romanian), which basically is a 134 kilometres (83 miles) long gorge carved out by the mighty Danube.
The Romanians and Serbians (or should I say Yugoslavians?) built a massive hydroelectric dam here which was completed in 1972. The dam doubles as a border crossing between Romania and Serbia at the other side of the river.
It really is a highly scenic stretch of the railway line and I was lucky enough to hit it right at the moment when the sun was setting.
