We begin at the beginning. Before we can start talking about the language of painting, we need to understand the vocabulary. The vocabulary of painting deals with color, and color is expressed in three dimensions: hue (the name of the color), value (the degree of lightness or darkness compared to black and white), and chroma (the intesity, or brightness or dullness). Of the three, we start with value. Value is the primary dimension used to create the illusion of form on a flat surface. As you will soon see in subsequent videos, creating a visible and portable scale of values is a helpful tool to assist you in your painting process.
