The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services just announced today that they are reverting or going to use the 2008 version of the naturalization civics test starting March 1, 2021.
Immigrant applicants who filed their application for naturalization on or after Dec. 1, 2020, and before March 1, 2021, who are likely to have been studying for the new 2020 test with 128 questions will be given the option to take either the 2020 civics test with 128 questions or the 2008 civics test with 100 questions.
There will be a transition period where both tests are being offered. The new 2020 test with 128 questions will be phased out or gradually be eliminated on April 19, 2021, for initial or first test takers. Immigrant applicants filing on or after March 1, 2021, will take the 2008 old version of the civics test.
If you can remember, on Dec. 1, 2020, the USCIS implemented a revised naturalization civics test (2020 civics test with 128 questions and answers) as part of a decennial test review and update process. However, the USCIS has finally decided that the 2020 civics test development content, process, testing procedures, and implementation schedule may unintentionally bring possible barriers to the naturalization process.
The USCIS will be using again the 2008 version of the naturalization civics test to eliminate those obstacles and make the process more accessible to all eligible people who want to apply for their American citizenship. Since the 2008 civics test was developed very well over a multi-year period with the input of more than 150 organizations, which included English as a second language experts, educators, and historians, and was piloted before its implementation.
Therefore, USCIS aims to make the process as accessible as possible with the request by President Biden to review the entire process in detail.
The civics test is officially given as an oral test to applicants who apply for U.S. citizenship through naturalization and is one of the lawful requirements for naturalizing. These applicants must show knowledge and understanding of the basic foundations of the history, principles, and form of government of the United States. The strong determination to naturalize shows an interest and commitment to America.
