There are hundreds of megalithic cyclopean walls in Italy, mostly in the Lazio region but also in Tuscany, Campania, Umbria, Abruzzo and Molise. Although they are attributed to the Romans, there are many researchers that debate this.
The Romans documented various construction techniques but never mentioned this one in particular in spite of the sheer volume of cyclopean masonry on the Italian peninsular. In this video I explore the arguments for and against a Roman date for the walls.
Could the sophisticated Bronze Age cultures in the Aegean have the answer? Considering that the origins of the Etruscans and their language are debatable, perhaps they built these massive polygonal walls?
I also look at the impressive examples of this megalithic architecture in Palestrina and Castel San Pietro Romano and go back to the Late Bronze Age to see what characterised the various cultures that made up the Mediterranean back then.
